Just north of the parking turnout, you’ll notice a "no hunting or trapping" sign. Follow a footpath into the woods and turn left onto the teal-diamond-blazed Highlands Trail, which climbs steadily on a footpath.

Near the top of the climb, the orange-blazed Roomy Mine Trail begins on the right. This will be your return route, but for now, continue ahead on the teal-diamond-blazed...

Hike description has been updated

The hike description has been updated. Hikers should park at a parking turnout on Townsend Road, thus avoiding the roadwalk along the busy West Brook Road. Also, the fascinating Roomy Mine, with a 60-foot-long passage into the hillside, is now open to hikers from April 15th to September 15th.

Trailhead has changed a bit.
From the gravel turnout on the south side of West Brook Road, the Highlands Trail follows West Brook Road west to Townsend Road. There's no gate nor grassy field to pass. Other than this, the trail description is fine. West Brook Road is not quiet and there's not much of a shoulder (I'm usually hiking with one or two dogs). You can probably park at the turnout on Townsend Road very close to West Brook Road.

Highlands/Roomy Mine Trails Loop from West Brook Road
We did this hike at the last minute on March 21, 2010. Easy to find, and an easy trail to follow. It was very scenic, though I suspect when the leaves are out, some of the views will be blocked. Some decent rock scrambles scattered throughout.
