What's the difference between Register and Join/Renew?
How do I print a page from this Web site?
What do I do if I get Access Denied on a page?
What do I do if I am ordering on the Web and do not see the expected discount prices?
Why can't I log in with my userid and password that I've used before?
Selling our printed maps is one of our primary means of supporting the work we do on trails. We are looking at various mechanisms of making maps or parts of maps available on the web. There are some brochure level maps that are missing some of the details available in small formats that can be printed on letter size paper. The full maps are very large files and need very large printers to print at a useful size. If they are shrunk to letter size they are essentially unreadable.
We have played with using Google Earth for presenting trail maps. Click here for some samples.
This is a list of the currently known problems users may encounter while exploring the New York - New Jersey Trail Conference Web site. In many cases, we suggest a workaround that you can employ.
For reference, you can also look at the list of Fixed Problems if you so desire.
(Note to editors: New entries should be placed at the top of this bulleted list. Child pages should be used for details of the problem and linked into the bulleted problem. When a problem is fixed, it should be moved to the Fixed Problems book with the the fix date appended, optionally annotated with the nature of the fix and/or marked using the strikeout font.)
The process of registering and joining or renewing membership is in the process of changing to make it easier. The central problem is that our main database of members is offline and the web does not know anything about your membership unless you tell the web by filling in fields correctly. This problem will take at least 6 months to a year to solve.
The smoothest flow occurs if you do things in this order:
1) Register as a user on the Web site by providing a user name, email and password.
In addition, if you are a Trail Conference member or are purchasing a membership at this time, check the box that asks if you are currently a member. We believe you but verify while processing the order. It is ok to check this box if your order includes a membership and you are just joining or renewing after a lapse. The membership # is optional. If you fill it in it helps the office process the order.
If you don't register or are not logged in to an existing account before ordering, you will be forced to register/login before you can check out. Your cart contents will be transferred to your registered account.
2) While you are logged in to the Web site, place your membership order.
You will be asked to enter some redundant information right now -- please do so and be aware we are trying to improve the flow so you won't have to next time you renew your membership.
We were so excited about making the databases of hikes and parks available as quickly as possible that we decided to launch the new site with a few know rough edges.
We ask for your patience as we work to improve this process. If you would like to see a little more information about the difference between Registering for the site and Joining the Trail Conference as a member, go here.
3) Make sure you complete the registration process by clicking on the link in the email we send you when you register! We do this to thwart spammers -- unfortunately, their promiscuity means we have to ask you to take this extra step.
If you use Firefox as your browser and get this message:
Secure connection failed. www.nynjtc.org uses an invalid security certificate.
Please note that this is not true. It is a known problem that some Firefox users experience.
Explanation:
All browsers have a built-in list of Certificate Authorities (CA) that they accept without question. Certificates are checked by asking the CAs if they accept the particular certificate that the site offers. Firefox is missing the following CA: The Go Daddy Group, Inc. Go Daddy Secure Certification Authority Go Daddy Class 2 CA Our certificate was issued by Go Daddy and is backed by this CA.
Solution:
The fix is to accept our certificate as an exception (follow the exception links on the rejection popup). This will add the above CA to Firefox's list of CAs and you will no longer be bothered with invalid certificate messages from our site or many other sites that have Go Daddy certificates. Alternatively use Internet Explorer or almost any other browser as they have the Go Daddy CA in their built-in CA list.
Internet Explorer 8, other browsers are not affected by this issue.
In some cases, IE 8 users see an incomplete or garbled shopping screen. This is a known Microsoft issue. If it happens to you, the workaround is to click on the Compatibility View icon (the torn paper icon next to the URL at the top of the IE window) or alternatively, to select Tools -> Compatibility View to add the nynjtc.org site to the list of Web sites that should be viewed in compatibility mode.
(See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956197 for detailed instructions.)
The problem is made worse by server or internet in general slowness. Clicking on refresh/reload and/or turning compatibility on/off a few times, sometimes fixes it.
We are working on converting to a newer release of the web software we use which may or may not fix the proglem.
For immediate relief use a different browser, which all work correctly.
This was a bug that has been fixed. However, if you registered for the site earlier this year, your account may still be marked incorrectly. You can self declare membership now to get your member discount. See http://www.nynjtc.org/book/what-do-i-do-if-i-am-ordering-web-and-do-not-see-expected-discount-prices for instructions on how to do this. We regret this inconvenience and will update this entry as soon as the problem is fixed.
That error is a known transient problem (worse on slower connections) with Internet Explorer version 5,6 and 7. Microsoft claims it is fixed in IE 8, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927917/
It does not occur in any other browser, e.g. Firefox, Safari or Google Chrome.
Please upgrade to either IE7 or Firefox.
In both IE and FF, use Ctl - and Ctl+ to change the viewing area. Hold down the control key while hitting either the minus or plus keys.
Our website is open to registered users to post comments and create forum entries. Which means that users can post links to places off our site which might not be safe. We eventually get around to checking these links but they may exist unmonitored for some period of time. Be careful about clicking on links in these posts particularly ones which use one of the link shorteners like tinyurl or bit.ly. If you see one of those you cannot tell immediately where they will take you. Follow the advice given here to see where they will take you before exposing yourself to any bad side effects.
Most browsers have either built-in or add-on extensions that do some amount of prescreening for evil links. Make sure you have these enabled.

Situation | Actions for you to take |
1. Make sure you are registered on this Web site. |
In order to make a purchase and benefit from any applied discount, you must be a registered user of this website. You can register before you shop, or as you proceed through checkout, when you will be asked to enter a userid and password. Please provide the requested information at that time. If you are a Trail Conference member and are registering on this website for the first time, or if you are purchasing a membership as part of this shopping transaction, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE MEMBER BOX when you register. You must check this box to see the member discount. You can also register for the site at any time by clicking on Login/Register in the left column of the Web page and then clicking on the Create New Account tab. |
2. Make sure you are logged in to the Web site. |
You are logged in if your name appears in the left column below the "Buy Merchandise" line. If Login/Register appears, you are not logged in. If you are not logged in and are registered for the Web site, log in now. The prices should adjust automatically. |
3. You are logged in but don't see the discounted price you expect.
|
First. confirm that you have validated your registration. Registration is a two-step process; the second step ideally happened when you clicked on the validation link in the email that we sent you when you registered. Perhaps you didn't see that email. Here's how to check your validation status:
|
If you see the Re-send message, validate your registration now:
You should now see the adjusted prices. |
|
4. You are a member or are purchasing a membership in this transaction, are fully registered on the Web site and logged in but you still don't see your 25% discount when you view your shopping cart. |
You may have to self-declare as a Member of the Trail Conference:
You should now see the 25% discount for the member price. |
Still not seeing the discounted price? |
Wow, we really don't expect you to get to this point! Please follow the instructions for registering and self-declaring membership once more before contacting us. If it really doesn't work, do let us know - if something else is wrong, we want to fix it quickly! |
If you set up a userid and password on our old Web site, it was not carried over to the new site when we moved in March 2009. You should Register for the new site and specify your userid and password at that time. Also remember to look for the confirmation email that we send to you. You have to open that email and click on the link in it to complete the registration process.
In this case, you should request a new password. Click on Login/Register and then click on the Request New Password tab and fill in the requested information.
If your userid or email address is rejected when you attempt to request a new password, try others you may have used.
In this case, please register!
Finally, if you really, really think you did register and we have a bug in our Web site processing, then send us a feedback to alert us to the problem.
It is often useful to print the page one is viewing on the Web site, for example, a hike description or a description of upcoming hikes. To do so, you should use the print button in your browser. If available, do a print preview first to make sure you are getting what you expect.
If you use larger text sizes than normal in your browser, you may have to adjust print settings so the text is not truncated during printing.
In Internet Explorer, go into File - Print Preview and check the print size setting. It should be set to Shrink to Fit. If you see a percentage number instead, change it.
In Firefox, go into File - Print Preview and check the Scale setting. It should be set to Shrink to Fit. If you see a percentage number instead, change it.
NOTE: If you are printing a Hike description where there are Photo and Parking tabs that display either a photo or a map of the parking, you can print both the photo and the map if you click on the parking tab to show the map before printing. Otherwise, a white space will show where the map should be ... we are trying to figure out why and fix this, but until we do, we suggest you use this workaround.
An access denied message near the top of your screen means the you are not logged on or don't have sufficient privileges to access that page. For most users, it simply means you are not logged on (and maybe not even registered yet).
Click on Login/Register in the left menu.
If you have just registered and tried to logon and get access denied, it is most likely that you have cookies turned off. Turn them on and try to logon again.
There are also pages that are restricted to members of certain groups. If you are not a member of the group, you will also get the access denied message. In this case you need to become a member of the group. If you go to My Groups on the left menu, you may be able to subscribe to the group, otherwise you need to talk with an appropriate staff member.
The following problems have been resolved:
FIXED: The shipping cost, if applicable, is now calculated automatically when you supply the shipping address.
Right now, contrary to the prompting message, one must click the "Calculate Shipping" button when placing and order, even if there is nothing to ship and the cost is zero. Failure to do so causes an error message. Not only that, the credit card info is invalidated, even though it appears to be ok.
The workaround is:
Go back and click the calculate shipping button and clear each credit card field, then reenter it. When you then click the Validate Order button, the transaction should be okay.
We are working to correct this so you only need to click Calculate Shipping to recompute the shipping, for example, when you decide to ship to a different address. Until then, it is necessary to do the extra data entry if you neglect to click Calculate Shipping the first time through.
Problem fixed. 3/9/2009. Even anonymous can use the form.
Currently you have to be a registered user to submit feedback.
